Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be;
embrace who you are.
~ Brené Brown

Creative people.
Creative solutions.

You're creative, and so am I. To help you break through the barriers that are keeping you stuck, I will use every psychotherapeutic tool I have to help. Every problem is as unique as the person experiencing it. The solution should be just as personal and guided by who you are--not a one-size-fits-all approach.

We will work together to create real change in your life by deconstructing facades, identifying values, and challenging norms to help you meet and embrace your real self.

Can you relate?

I've worked hard for what I have, but I still don't feel like "enough."
I don't know where my career ends and my life begins.
I keep reaching my goals, but my satisfaction is short-lived.
I'm not "struggling" in any identifiable way, but I'm not happy.
I've always thought that who I am and what I do are the same thing. I'm not so sure anymore.
If achievement is not the key to happiness, I don't know what is.

Let's Find Your Balance

When faced with stressful life events, you may notice yourself acting in ways that are more extreme than normal. When these responses are temporary, your ability to do this is actually adaptive.

Over time, however, these unbalanced responses can become inflexible, automatic, and eventually,
problems in themselves.

Sometimes we can get back to balance on our own. Other times we need help finding the way.

If any of these experiences sound like you, I'd like to help.

Whether with your career or your relationships, I can help you find the peace and calm you crave. I am skilled in a variety of treatment approaches to help you on this journey, and I will integrate them to create a personalized treatment plan that is tailor made to suit you.

Individual Psychotherapy for Adults

About Psychotherapy with Dr. Hoffman

What To Expect

I believe that my role as a therapist is to engage you with curiosity and meet you "where you're at" in every session. What follows from there is highly dependent on your needs in the moment and your goals for the work, so the unfolding of the process will be as individual as you are.

Practically speaking, therapy sessions always begin with payment. Then, unless there is an important issue that needs attention (e.g., a billing or scheduling issue, follow-up on a specific task, etc.), it will be up to you to begin our discussion. I am not a passive observer of the process. You can expect me to be active in sessions, offering my thoughts and perspectives, and inviting you to be curious about your own experiences as well.

Our first sessions together will include a comprehensive interview where we will review relevant background information and discuss your goals for therapy. At the end of that process, we will discuss next steps and I will share my thoughts about how to help you achieve your goals. If the initial interview reveals an area of attention that I am not trained to address, I may provide you with referrals to another therapist at that time.

Psychotherapy sessions most commonly take place weekly and are 50 minutes in length. Under certain circumstances, the length and frequency of appointments may be increased or decreased, and you may be eligible for therapy via phone or video chat. Most new clients, however, will begin with weekly, in-person appointments.

Psychotherapy Options

Brief Psychotherapy

In brief work, we usually focus on one issue within a limited time frame. The number of sessions will depend on the kind of issue that we choose to address, but brief therapy is commonly 8-12 sessions. These sessions focus on behavioral changes and are directive and solution-focused. Brief therapy rarely results in the deeper healing and self-discovery that depth therapy provides, but it can offer symptom relief and allow you to make real progress in stuck areas of your life.

Depth Psychotherapy

Depth therapy is usually longer term and focused on developing awareness of the unconscious processes that drive behaviors, altering longstanding patterns of behavior, and identifying the roots of problematic issues in your life. It is a process of self-discovery that leads to personal growth and behavioral changes. There is less focus on diagnoses and more attention is paid to relationships, unconscious needs and desires, and healing old wounds.

Which type of psychotherapy is right for me?

If psychotherapy were a journey through the woods, brief therapy would be choosing one destination and taking the fastest route to get there. Along the way, I may note some areas of interest and suggest that you come back to explore them when you are able to, but I will continue to guide you to the destination. In depth therapy, we may have multiple destinations in mind and take winding, intersecting paths to find them. When something of interest appears on the way, we stop and spend time there. We may even step off the path to go deeper into the wilderness seeking to uncover things long hidden away. Both journeys are worthwhile, but many things factor into deciding which is best for you.

Brief therapy can be a good option for people on a budget or with a specific goal that can be achieved while other issues are set aside. Not everyone will be a candidate for this type of work. Some issues are too complex and interrelated to be worked on separately and other issues are simply not responsive to short-term interventions. Brief therapy also requires both you and I to adhere to the tasks and topics agreed upon at the outset of treatment despite other issues that may arise either externally or in response to the work.

Depth work goes at your pace and takes time, revealing new areas for exploration as it unfolds. It focuses on making the unconscious conscious, which will give you the ability to choose new behaviors in previously triggering situations. Depth therapy can result in greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of yourself. It is not directive in the way that brief therapy is, making it a lengthy process that can be expensive and often not within the restrictions of third-party payer policies.
